Redfern Legal Centre’s 2024–25 Annual Report.
This year, we built stronger ties with our community, increased access to justice for thousands of people experiencing disadvantage, and achieved positive, systemic change.
We had a landmark win in a sexual harassment case in the Federal Court of Australia, achieving a ground breaking award of damages. Biplavi Magar is a young female international student whose evidence was found to be “not just truthful and reliable, but also evocative and compelling”.
The judgment demonstrates that no matter your race, disability or visa status, you have the right to a safe workplace, free from discrimination and harassment.
We launched a Police Accountability Dashboard – the first tool of its kind in Australia, to increase NSW Police accountability and transparency, and continued our tenacious advocacy to ensure police powers in New South Wales are not discriminatory and unjust.
We supported Selwyn Street Boarding House residents, working with community members and other organisations to assert their right to remain in the homes that many of the residents had been in for decades, and allowing them time to find alternate accommodation.
Through our coordination of the national Economic Abuse
Reference Group, our holistic, multidisciplinary Financial Abuse Service has led cross-sector advocacy to improve the tax and corporate systems for victim survivors of financial abuse.
