Tip of the Week: Information on Sexual Assault

Redfern Legal Centre’s International Student Clinic helps many students who have experienced issues involving sexual assault. This is a serious issue that affects all genders.

About sexual assault

Sexual assault can take many different forms. Have any of these things happened to you?

  • Stalking
  • Sexting, sexual jokes or touching
  • Rape or attempted rape

It’s important to know you have the right to refuse any kind of unwanted sexual advance, and you can withdraw your consent at any time by saying no. You should never blame yourself, or let the other person make you feel guilty.

What can you do if you have been sexually assaulted?

  1. Speak up: tell someone you trust, and report this to the police. Sexual assault is never okay.
  2. See a GP or sexual health clinic for sexual health screenings, pregnancy testing, and general advice or support.
  3. Check with your OSHC provider to see whether you can claim some (if not all) of the money back.
  4. Get support. It’s important to know that you are not alone. There are many counselling services that can help you.
  5. Keep a copy of any text messages, emails and medical reports connected to the event.
